Analyzing the Effectiveness of Your Interview

“I've had 6 interviews and 6 turndowns! What is wrong?”

You have to face many interviews before you are going to be successful. There are many reasons for not being considered for the position.

  • Employer fears (referred to earlier)
  • Employer is being very narrow in the criteria (that's why employers resort to headhunters – there might only be 2 or 3 people in the whole industry that can fit the role).
  • Age bias; gender bias; body type bias

You may be self-sabotaging!!

  • You refuse to work overtime
  • You convey the sense that you won't be happy fulfilling all of the responsibilities of the position i.e. I am a financial accountant – I won't do accounts receivable and I won't do the bank reconciliations
  • My strength is working in the back office – I am not good at working with the factory floor staff or the sales people
  • You may be aiming too high – the position is corporate accountant but you send signals that you see yourself as the Director of Finance.

Ask the interviewer to tell you the truth as to the reasons for your rejection. Some will!!

Everyone can use a dose of reality. This will be of immeasurable help to you on future interviews.
